THE PANTHER FILE

Achtung Panzer No.4 - Panther, Jagdpanther & Brummbär (Revised Edition) - Hiromu Araki (Editor), Dai Nippon Kaiga, Japan, 1994. [ISBN: 4-499-22671-6]. S/C 96pp. Japanese text w/ English captions.

A superb, detailed study of the Panther and Jagdpanther. While the book is light on photographs, it provides superb 4-view 1/35 scale drawings and a wealth of detailed sketches. The quality of this work must be seen to be believed. The only drawback is the Japanese text. While all of the photos and drawings have English captions, the remainder of the text is in Japanese only.

German Combat Tank Panther - Mannosuke Toda (Editor), Tank Magazine Special, Tank Magazine Co. Ltd. Publishers, Tokyo, 1981. S/C 120pp. Japanese text w/ English captions.

Useful photo book on the Panther family with good shot selection, though printed a little dark. Good colour plate artwork at the start and 2 to 3 photos per page thereafter. Sections on captured Panthers and handy detail shots of museum examples. The D-based Coelian prototype, the single Beobachtungswagen D, the Jagdpanther, and Bergepanther also get brief photo coverage.

Germany’s Panther Tank - The Quest For Combat Supremacy - Thomas L. Jentz, Schiffer Publishing, Pennsylvania, 1995. [ISBN: 0-88740-812-5]. H/C 156pp. English text.

THE definitive reference on the Panther tank. Period. An excellent study covering the development, production, capabilities and combat operations of the Panther tank. Note that none of the Panther sub-variants are covered in this book. The photos are excellent, a combination of production/detail and combat shots. The drawings and sketches are superb. Highly recommended for those interested in this vehicle.

Ground Power No.024 - Pz.Kpfw. V Panther - Delta Publishing Co., Tokyo, 1996. S/C 152pp. Japanese text.

Another superb Japanese publication on the Panther. Following the example of Sturm & Drang No.5, this book provides a photo history of the Panther tank. However, in addition to the combat shots, there is a substantial amount of text covering the development and operation of this vehicle. There are also a number of close-up shots of surviving vehicles. While there are no scale prints, there are a number of excellent sketches highlighting various features of each production model. Again, all text is in Japanese.

Medium Tank "Panther" - Russian bi-monthly magazine issue 2/97. S/C 32pp. Russian text and captions.

Although all text is in Russian, there is a good blend of shots, colour plates and plans in this very cheap magazine. Many shots will be familiar but there are a few new ones throughout. It contains some good Russian sketches as well as a few from the Japanese Achtung Panzer series, as well as a great centre-spread LHS sectional elevation of an Ausf. A, and a couple of new shots from Soviet sources. Lastly a shot of a destroyed Turret stellung in a German city.

Panther - Thomas Anderson & Vincent Wai, Concord Publications, Hong Kong, 1996. [ISBN: 962-361-610-4]. S/C 72pp. English text.

An interesting title that combines a reasonable collection of photos with some descriptive text. While most photos have been published previously, there are a number that are new, including a shot of a steel-wheeled Panther G. There are sixteen (16) colour plates, of average quality. While not a bad book, it is not great either, making it hard to justify the $20 USD price tag.

Panther - Horst Schiebert, Schiffer Military History Vol.37, Schiffer Publishing, Pennsylvania, 1991. [ISBN: 0-88740-314-X] S/C 48pp. English text.

Translated from the original German Waffen-Arsenal title, this landscape format book (a la Squadron/Signal), has a useful selection of wartime shots of the Panther gun tanks in action, and in museums. A good affordable pictorial reference work.

Panther Ausf. A (Sd.Kfz.171) - Bruce Alain Hanel D. Saddock & Willy Peters, Armour in Detail No.2, Verlinden Publications VP-939, Lier 1994. S/C 24pp. English text.

A very handy, full colour walk-around of the Saumur Museum Ausf. A, ideal for modellers. On average about 3 to 4 photos per page. The first 13 pages are of the exterior while the last 10 are of the interior.

Panther Colour - Janusz Ledwoch, Wydawnictwo Militaria series No.62, Warsaw, 1998. [ISBN: 83-7219-13-5]. S/C 34pp. Polish text w/ English captions.

A good source of Panther camo schemes and marking variations. Made up of about 20 b&w shots but a lot more (c.60) colour side view profiles than the standard Polish profiles in this series. Some unusual paint schemes and numbering options provide numerous ideas for modelling use.

Panther - 50th Anniversary Collectors Edition - Bruce Culver and Uwe Feist, Ryton Publishing USA, Washington, 1995. H/C 270pp. English text.

A good history of the development, production and operation of the Panther tank. A large number of photographs covering combat, production and close-ups of surviving vehicles. There are 1:35 scale prints, by John L. Rue, covering all major production models, including the Bergepanther and Ausf. F. As well, there are a number of colour plates by Uwe Feist. While the authors have gone to great length to provide as much contextual information as possible, including an interview with E. Barkmann, there are a number of blatant errors in the photo captions and colour prints. These detract from an otherwise excellent book.

Panther - Janusz Ledwoch, Widawnictwo Militaria Series No.60, Warsaw, 1998. [ISBN: 83-7219-010-0]. S/C 82pp. Polish text w/ English captions.

An update of the 1993 title, this book is an excellent buy. Printed on glossy paper, there are a good number of photos, most different from those published in the 1993 edition. There are scale plans of the D, A and G variants, not to mention side elevations of the F and Panther II. All drawings are crisp and of above average quality. To finish off, there are 24 pages of colour plates, including 49 side elevations, 1 5-view, 8 schematics and two (2) pages of colour photos of existing vehicles. Highly recommended.

Panther in Action - Bruce Culver and Don Greer, Squadron/Signal Armour in Action No.11, Squadron Signal Publications, Texas, 1975. [ISBN: 0-89747-044-3]. S/C 50pp. English text.

A good introductory title providing an excellent source of photographs of the Panther D, A, G, Jagdpanther and Bergepanther. While not long on text, a brief description of each vehicle is provided. A number of colour plates are provided - typical top-notch work from Greer. An excellent title to add to one’s collection, especially considering the low price.

Panther in Detail - Bruce Culver and Uwe Feist, Ryton Publications USA, Washington, 1998. H/C 181pp. English text.

A summarised version of the "Panther" title by the same authors. This book was originally published after the original title had gone out of print. The book provides a good mix of combat photos, production shots, up close details and text covering all production variants of the Panther, including the Ausf. F. As well, there are a number of good 1:35 scale prints by John L. Rue and colour plates by Uwe Feist. As with the original title, this books suffers from a number of inaccuracies regarding photo captions and text. A good title to get unless you have the original title.

Panther im Einsatz 1943-1945 - Horst Scheibert, Waffen-Arsenal Sonderband S-24, Podzun-Pallas-Verlag, Germany, 1992. [ISBN: 3-7909-0439-2]. S/C 52pp. German text.

One of the few Waffen-Arsenal titles yet to be translated by Schiffer, which is a shame as it has a great mix of shots with some old favourites but some very good shots not seen elsewhere. Mostly combat shots only let down by the low grade paper they’re printed on. Some oddball camo schemes and zimmerit types.

Panther & Its Variants - Walter J. Spielberger (Translated by Don Cox), Schiffer Publishing, Pennsylvania, 1993. [ISBN: 0-88740-397-2]. H/C 284pp. English text.

Recently succeeded by "Germany’s Panther Tank", this title still remains one of the best resources available on this vehicle. Spielberger goes into minute detail, covering the development of the Panther and its many sub-variants. While there are relatively few combat shots, the book provides a wealth of production shots and sub-component assemblies. There are a good number of side elevations, but of even greater value are the line diagrams and sketches detailing many of the sub-components, including the Ausf. D and A driver’s hatch, torsion bar assembly and engine. While this title has been surpassed by more recent publications, it still remains an excellent resource.

Panther Model Fibel - Model Art No.448, Model Art Co. Ltd., Tokyo, 1995. S/C 164pp. Japanese text.

An excellent title showing various dioramas and detailing how they were built. Topics include the Panther D, A, G (Early), G (Late), G (M-10), Jagdpanther, Bergepanther, Panther F, Panther II and Flakpanzer Coelian. As well as providing excellent shots of the models in construction, there are a number of sketches detailing modifications made to each kit and excellent 1/35th scale prints each major variant. Also, there are a number of detail shots of surviving vehicles. To close off, there is a detailed description of units that used Panthers during the war, unfortunately in Japanese. An excellent book.

Panther Variants 1942-1945 - Hilary Doyle and Tom Jentz (Colour Plates by Mike Badrocke), Osprey New Vanguard 22, London, 1997. [ISBN: 1-85532-476-8]. S/C 48pp. English text.

This title concentrates solely on the variants of the Panther. There is approximately 4 pages detailing the development of the Panther, the rest concentrating on the various sub-variants produced and proposed including the Jagdpanther, Bergepanther, Panzerbeobachtungswagen (Artillery) Panther and Panther Ostwallturm. The colour plates, as typical of the New Vanguard series, are excellent. Of note is the impressive cutaway of a night-fighting equipped Panther G and the 3-view spreads of the Jagdpanther and Panzerbeobachtungswagen. As well, the line drawings by Hilary Doyle are very good. Recommended only for die-hard Panther fanatics.

Panzerkampfwagen V Panther - Chris Ellis and Peter Chamberlain, AFV/Weapons Profile No.10, Profile Publications, Berks, 1978. S/C 20pp. English text.

Another classic title, long out of print, this book provides a concise summary of the development and production of the Panther. A number of photographs are provided, both combat and manufacturing shots. There is a nice colour print spread in the book’s centre. A nice title to have in one’s collection, but not critical.

Panzerkampfwagen V - Panther - Walter J. Spielberger & Uwe Feist, Feist Publications, California, 1968. [Library of Congress No. 68-22408]. S/C 56pp. English text.

An excellent photographic study of the Panther combining combat and production shots. A number of photos cover the Jagdpanther, including a photo of the Jagdpanther commanded by Spielberger in 1945. The Bergepanther is also covered, as are some of the proposed Panther projects that never made it beyond the wood mock-up stage. To finish off, there is an excerpt from the Twenty-Third Hussars regimental history, covering the experiences of British tankers when in combat against the Panther - very interesting.

Panzers at Saumur No.2 - Hiroshi Ichimura (Editor), Dai Nihon Kaiga Co. Ltd., Tokyo, 1990. S/C 60pp. Japanese text w/ English captions.

While only being part of the make-up of this title (the other vehicle covered in detail is the Opel Panzerwerfer Maultier halftrack, as well as towed rocket launchers – 18 pages all up), it provides an invaluable photographic study of the Panther A and Early Jagdpanther at the French Saumur museum. It contains great detail shots, mostly in colour of both inside and out all round the A, though sadly only 2 photo pages are given to the Jagdpanther with 14 shots, followed by a lone sketch page. A lot of sketches are also provided on all aspects of the A as well as the other members of the family, from basic differences to specific features and details of the variants. An extremely detailed LHS sectional view is provided through an A, as are comic book style illustrated pages on combat operations and maintenance procedures, and a set of fully dimensioned 4-view working drawing plans. All up, very useful.

Pz.Kpfw. V Panther - Janusz Ledwoch, Widawnictwo Militaria Series No.03, Warsaw, 1993. [ISBN: 83-86209-17-8]. S/C 48pp. Polish text.

A reasonable collection of photos covering the D, A and G variants of the Panther. A number of the photos are new, mostly covering Panthers operating in Poland during 1944. There are a number of good 1:35 line drawings as well as elevation plans of all other variants. There are six (6) colour plates on the Panther, one (1) colour plate of the Jagdpanther, one (1) 5-view plan of a Panther Ausf. A and twenty (20) various unit insignias. As well, there are a number of colour photos of existing Panthers. Overall, a reasonable title for the price.

Pz.Kpfw. V Panther - Bryan Perret (Colour Plates by David E. Smith), Osprey Vanguard 21, London, 1981. [ISBN: 0-85045-397-6]. S/C 40pp. English text.

An excellent, concise history of the Panther tank. While somewhat short on photos, this book provides a good description of the development, production and operational histories of this vehicle. There are eight (8) pages of colour plates, and a nice 3-view line drawing of the converted Panthers used during the Battle of the Bulge. A collector’s item now, this is a good reference to pick up if you can find it.

Pz.Kpfw. V Panther Tank (Revised Edition) - Norihiko Hirata (Editor), Sunday Art Publications, Tokyo, 1995. S/C 130pp. Japanese text.

The revised edition of the original 1993 publication, this book is a photo history covering the Ausf. D, A, G, Bergepanther and Jagdpanther. While most photos can be found in other publications, there are a number of new shots - mostly additional views of previously photographed vehicles. As well, there are a number of scale elevation drawings and a nice cut-away line drawing showing the fighting compartment.

PZ.KPFW. V PANTHER - Koku-Fan: "Pictorial German tanks of the World War Two" Series special, Bunrin-Do Publishers, Tokyo, August 1976. S/C 94pp. Japanese text.

Large A4 format pictorial on the Panther. Begins with a section containing 6 colour shots of APG museum examples at the time, some 1/48th scale 4-view plans of the D, A, G & Jagdpanther, then into the b&w shots. Many are full page views and are all printed very clearly and sharply. A good mix of photos and the odd sequence here and there of the same vehicle or unit, though mostly all fairly well-known ones by now. A small section is given to coverage of the Jagdpanther, though with only about 10 familiar shots.

PZ.KPFW. V PANTHER - Koku-Fan: "Pictorial German tanks of the World War Two" Series special, Bunrin-Do Publishers, Tokyo, January 1979. S/C 94pp. Japanese text w/ English captions.

Begins with a section containing 6 colour shots of various museum examples and recoveries at the time, plus 3 wartime colour picts. of a knocked out Ausf. A, a Mid prod. Jagdpanther, and a colourised? D in red primer at the factory, Again some more 1/48th scale 4 –view plans of the D, A, G & Jagdpanther, then into the b&w shots. Many are full page views and all are printed very sharply and are a good mix of photos, though this time of some slightly less common picts. Sturm & Drang No. 5 - Panther - Tank Magazine Special Issue, Delta Publishing Co., Tokyo, 1992. S/C 156pp. Japanese text.

An excellent photo history of the Panther. The book is divided into three (3) sections - one each for the Ausf. D, A and G. All photos are of excellent quality, however, all text, including captions, is in Japanese. As well, there are 15 colour plates and 5-view plans of the Ausf. D and G (Late) provided in 1:35 scale. Highly recommended.

The Panther Family - Horst Scheibert, Schiffer Publishing, Pennsylvania, 1990. [ISBN: 0-88740-202-X]. S/C 48pp. English text.

Another Waffen-Arsenal title originally in German translated by Schiffer, which has a very good pictorial coverage of the Panther and its variants. Doyle 1/35th and 1/48th scale side views and plans compliment the shots nicely. The gun tanks – Ausf. D, A, and G, are each given sections, as well as the command Panthers, the Beobachtungswagen Ausf. D, and finally the Jagdpanther and Bergepanther get a run. A good cheap, basic reference.
