DescriptionHere is my Tamiya 1:35 scale Sturmgeschutz III Ausf. B. I snipped the first part from the sprues on 25 January 2026 at 8:27 pm. Tools down came just under 24 hours later, on 26 January at 7:43 pm. Digital timestamping is a handy thing!
I didn’t spend marathon sessions at the bench either. The kit was completed over four or five relaxed sessions while listening to an audio book – John le Carré’s “Legacy of Spies” - with plenty of time left for eating, sleeping and even seeing the family. Tamiya’s instructions guide the build through 19 clear and logical steps. I followed the suggested sequence without deviation.
Although I had no intention of displaying the fighting compartment, I assembled it fully. Some of the gun sub-assemblies are fiddly—particularly the breech detail, including the sight, traverse and elevation wheels, seat and recuperator. Extra time spent test-fitting here was well rewarded. The superstructure is designed to be removable for interior display, although I initially struggled to understand how it was meant to fit.
Not for the first time, the foolproof met the fool! The instructions depict the superstructure tilted forward at around 45 degrees, then rotated back into place. After a few dry runs, everything clicked together perfectly. Here is the Tamiya Stug III Ausf. B compared to the Dragon Ausf. A.
