The MAZ-537 is a true Soviet icon, standing proudly alongside the Urals, ZILs, and KamAZ series. It embodies the classic Soviet design philosophy — big, straightforward, and powerful — a mindset that extended well beyond trucks to aircraft and artillery. Just look at the Mi-26 and MiG-25 for proof of that approach.

Another fascinating aspect of the MAZ series (Trumpeter produces several variants, with two different trailers) is its wide range of national operators. The MAZ-537 has seen active service with Soviet and Democratic Republic of Afghanistan forces, and later with Serbia, Croatia, Vietnam, Iran, and more recently, Ukraine.

The Trumpeter kits have been on the market for some time, available in both 1:35 and 1:72 scales, and ScaleX now provides detailed replacement wheel sets for each. The main weakness of the Trumpeter MAZ-537 kits has always been the tyres and wheels.

The kit tyres are overly smooth and perfectly round — lacking the realistic flattening and tread detail of the real thing — and both the truck and trailer wheels fit loosely, tending to pop off or slide sideways at exactly the wrong moment. In short, the wheels have long been the Achilles’ heel of Trumpeter’s MAZ series.
