The MAZ-543 chassis, a robust 8x8 heavy-duty platform from Belarus, forms the backbone for numerous Soviet/Russian military vehicles, most famously Scud and S-300 missile launchers, Smerch MLRS, and Bal anti-ship systems

In keeping with what modellers have come to expect from Odessa-based ScaleX, this new 3D-printed release adds a welcome level of extra realism to Trumpeter’s BM-30 Smerch Multiple Rocket Launcher System.

The real vehicle has seen service with a number of operators, including Ukraine, Syria, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia, and has appeared in several recent conflicts. Ukrainian vehicles, from the early ATO period through to the current war of liberation, have worn a wide variety of markings and camouflage schemes, ranging from early brown and green finishes to later digital camouflage patterns. Many Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian examples also employ cloth engine intake covers during freezing winter conditions.

ScaleX offers the large BM-30 wheels in both standard and sagged configurations. These substantial wheels, with their prominent tread pattern, are printed in fine, crisp detail and can be removed from their thin 3D-printed mounting posts with ease.

It is also worth noting that these wheels are not limited to the BM-30. They can be used on a range of other eight-wheel MAZ-based vehicles produced by Trumpeter, including the 30N6E Flap Lid radar system, the S-300-based 5P85S TEL, as well as various Soviet and North Korean Scud missile launchers.

The ScaleX wheels are therefore a must-have upgrade for fans of these large Eastern Bloc heavy hitters, and will certainly enhance any collection of Soviet “monster trucks” in your stash. They are also compatible with Meng’s excellent BM-30 kit, giving modellers plenty of options to choose from.
